CHOOSING HAPPINESS
This week in my class I shared some tips for cultivating the practice of CHOOSING HAPPINESS. We know whatever we practice we get better at and we practice things we don’t want to get better at without even realizing it. That is what mindfulness offers… a chance to consciously choose what we want to “practice”.
There are two parts to cultivating a practice of CHOOSING HAPPINESS. The first is Conscious Savoring; we need to tune into and notice those moments of joy instead of speeding right by them. The second is making a Commitment to Pause; to stay in those moments once we notice them. Just like anything else we practice, to get better at this takes equal parts discipline and compassion.
Here is a quote by Henri Nouwen; “Joy does not simply happen to us. We have to choose joy and keep choosing it every day.” I hope you all cultivate a powerful happiness practice full of savoring, pausing, and compassion this week as we all celebrate Thanksgiving.
